Dr Raj Persaud: Expert Psychiatrist


Dr. Raj Persaud is an esteemed Consultant Psychiatrist with a distinguished career that includes his role as a Consultant at the Bethlem Royal and Maudsley NHS Hospitals in London from 1994 to 2008 and as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, University of London—Europe’s leading institutions for psychiatric research and training.

Dr. Persaud also served as a Research Fellow at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the U.S. and the Institute of Neurology at Queen Square. His advanced training, which began after graduating from UCH Medical School in 1986, has been centered at the Institute of Psychiatry and the Maudsley Hospitals. Adding to his psychiatric expertise, Dr. Persaud holds a degree in psychology with First Class Honours and eight additional degrees and diplomas, including a Master’s in Statistics. His accolades include the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Research Prize and Medal, the Maudsley’s Denis Hill Prize, and the Osler Medal, alongside the Royal College’s prestigious Morris Markowe Prize.

In 2004, he was appointed as a Visiting Professor for Public Understanding of Psychiatry at Gresham College and was chosen by the Royal College of Psychiatrists to edit their first book intended for public education, The Mind: A User’s Guide, which achieved top ten bestseller status after its publication in 2007. His other five books have also reached bestseller lists, with recent contributions including a chapter in The Female Mind: A User’s Guide, the Royal College’s latest publication.

Dr. Persaud’s writings are featured in authoritative texts such as the Oxford Companion to the Mind, and he has authored a chapter in the comprehensive trainee textbook Psychiatry – An Evidence-Based Text. His nearly 100 publications in respected journals like The British Journal of PsychiatryBritish Medical Journal, and The Lancet underscore his significant contributions to the field.
